All residents of Alvern Gardens apartments are likely aware by now that Vermont Ave. is due to be paved next week. Written notices were hand delivered to each apartment today, and as soon as the leasing office is notified by the Castle Shannon Police Department, they will post a second written notice in advance of the exact date of paving. The second notice will be posted on the front door of each building.
Paving will take place between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on the TBD date. During these hours, absolutely no vehicles will be allowed to park on Vermont Ave. Cars will be allowed back on the street after 5 p.m. but must be removed again by 7 a.m. the following day for paving to continue. Any vehicles parked on Vermont Ave. during the paving construction hours will be towed at the owner’s expense.
Anyone interested in renting a garage before paving begins, is welcome to stop by the leasing office or contact us at 412-561-4663. We do have garages available throughout the property and on Vermont Ave., so if you want to have a guaranteed parking spot during construction, inquire at your earliest convenience.
Residents who live in buildings with permit-only parking lots but have not yet picked up their permit at the leasing office, please do so before paving begins. If you have an old blue permit, please come in to upgrade to our new orange permits. Permits are provided free of charge. To receive a permit, you must provide your license and registration. If you can’t make it to the leasing office in person, please notify us. We can deliver a permit to your apartment if you fax or email us copies of the required paperwork.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank all of our residents for their patience and cooperation in this matter.
Next week is the Castle Shannon Volunteer Fire Department’s annual carnival.
It’s not too late to get your $1 ticket for the car raffle and enter for your chance to win a Chevy, up to a $30,000 value.
The carnival starts at 7 p.m. each night and runs from Monday the 25th to Saturday the 30th. Closing times of the carnival will depend on attendance and the weather each night. The carnival takes place at the CSVFD, right off the Memorial Hall stop on the Blue Line of the “T”, and walking distance from Place Seville Apartments and Alvern Gardens Apartments.
Ride tickets can be bought for $2.50 at the ticket booth at the carnival. The typical carnival games of chance are also featured at the event, including poker tables and a duck pond.
There will be delicious carnival food: hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, hot sausage sandwiches, cheese sticks, french fries, funnel cake, ice cream, cotton candy, snow cones, and more.
This carnival is a key fundraiser for the Volunteer Fire Department, so we hope lots of people turn out to play games, ride rides, and enjoy tasty food. And, of course, one lucky visitor will drive home in a new Chevy!
Parking is free, but limited, so if you can take the “T” or walk, we don’t recommend driving to the carnival.

Memorial Day weekend is, of course, America’s unofficial pool opening weekend, and there are some great options available around Pittsburgh.
Sandcastle is opening its gates for the 2016 season at 11 a.m. on Saturday. There are a variety of ticket options, so check their website for details.
The Mt. Lebanon Swim Center opens at 11 a.m. on Saturday for an hour long adult swim before opening to the general public for the season. Season passes are available, but admission at the gate is also an option.
The Dormont Pool is slightly less expensive than the Mt. Lebanon Swim Center, and people living in the Keystone Oaks School District enjoy resident pricing. The Dormont Pool opens at noon on Saturday. Daily hours start on June 11, after school lets out for the summer.

It’s spring cleaning time again, so we’re offering five tips on how to clear the air and get rid of any nasty lingering odors in your home.
- Clear the drains: Garbage disposals are notorious for getting stinky, but even drains without disposals can get funky when they’re clogged. You might not even notice yet that the the sink is draining slowly, but whatever’s down there is stinking up the place. Start by pouring down a mixture of baking soda and vinegar followed by very hot water. If that doesn’t do the trick, call a plumber, or your maintenance department if you rent.
- Keep the humidity down: mold and mildew thrive in humid environments, so keeping your home well ventilated is key. Although mold doesn’t typically have an odor, so mildew is the most likely culprit when your home smells musty. If your bathroom doesn’t have a fan, open the window after each shower (or during if possible), and create as much of a cross breeze as you can by leaving the bathroom door open. Wiping down the shower/tub and sink after use also helps to cut back on mildew growth.
- Clean soft surfaces: Fabric absorbs odor, so to get your home smelling truly fresh you’ll want to take down all your drapes to wash them (take them to a laundromat with industrial sized machines). You’ll also want to either rent a carpet shampooer or hire a professional cleaner if you have large area rugs or carpeting. Hiring someone is the best route to go because they’ll be able to clean your upholstery as well.
- Banish smokers to the outdoors: This may seem obvious, but tobacco smoke deposits tar on all surfaces it comes into contact with, so the smell of one cigarette lingers for ages. To keep your home smelling fresh, smoke outside.
- DIY odor eliminators: Most of us know the old trick of keeping an open box of baking soda in the fridge to absorb odors, but that trick applies to more places than the fridge. Plus, coffee grounds do the same thing, so before you throw out your used grounds, consider saving them. A jar full of used, dried coffee grounds soaks up stink just as well as baking soda.

Mt. Lebanon Partnership’s Uptown Farmers’ Market opens its season at 9 a.m. tomorrow. It takes place around 710 Washington Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15228, by WesBanco and the Mt. Lebanon Municipal Building, just a couple blocks down from the Mt. Lebanon T station (Red Line) and walking distance from Prudential’s own Cornell Place Apartments. The market runs 9 a.m.-noon every Saturday through November 19th. On the second Saturday of each month, the market will include live music and other special activities. The first Second Saturday will take place on May 14th and will feature music from local bluegrass band The Mackin Family.
The twelfth season of the Market Square Farmers Market starts at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 12. This downtown event is just a short walk from the Gateway T Station. The event runs 10 a.m.-2 p.m. every Thursday through October 27th and coincides with free outdoor concerts from 11:30 to 1:30. Special events like Christmas in July and Navy Week will take place throughout the season.
The Mt. Lebanon Lions Club Farmers’ Market won’t open until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 1. This one takes place 4-7 p.m. every Wednesday (no end date listed) at the Mt. Lebanon United Lutheran Church (975 Washington Rd., Pittsburgh, PA 15228)
We came across this Country Living article earlier this week and decided it’s a must-share. We’ve given lots of advice in the past about moving and how to make a smooth transition to a new home, but we’ve never shared anything about what to keep when you’re downsizing.
A fair number of our new residents are moving to apartments after living in houses for several years, and although they’re relieved that Alvern Gardens Apartments feature spacious layouts and included extra storage, there’s usually some stuff that has to go. Country Living advises putting special mementos, family heirlooms, and collections amassed over the years in storage rather than throwing them away. These are things that are important to you and your family, so they’re worth keeping in a safe space. For our part, we recommend buying plastic bins with tightly sealing lids to store those things securely. The article also notes the importance of wiping all personal information from electronics before getting rid of them, a key step that many people forget.
We also agree one hundred percent that important documents must be kept safe through a move. A small filing cabinet or even a filing box doesn’t take up much space and will help you keep your life organized.

It’s OK, we didn’t know what hydroponic gardening was before this either. Hydroponic means growing plants in water instead of soil. The advantage seems to be that it can be done in a much smaller space—and it can be done year-round! There’s no price yet for IKEA’s KRYDDA/VÄXER, but we are definitely intrigued by the possibilities.
Now, as it turns out, people have hacked other IKEA products into hydroponic gardens long before the company came out with their own. So for anyone interested in an even more DIY option, check out ELIOOO.
Now that we know that hydroponics exists and seems to be fairly simple to DIY, we’re excited to start growing our own veggies, no matter the season, no matter how busy we are, no matter how much space we may or may not have.
Last week, we listed our picks for the best dog breeds for apartment living. We noted that some of the breeds, dachshunds for example, might need a little extra training to adjust them to close quarters. So this week, we figured we would go into detail about the kind of training a dog needs to do well in an apartment.
- More church mouse than guard dog: Incessant barking is a problem no matter where you live with a dog, but it can cause serious issues when you live in an apartment. Your dog needs to be taught from day one to stay quiet when people knock on the door, come in and out of the apartment, and in and out of the building.
- Professional walker: All dogs should be well trained when it comes to walking on a leash, but because apartment dwelling dogs stand to encounter a lot more traffic even in the hallways of their building, it’s extremely important that they heel properly.
- Come when called: Even though most apartment buildings, Alvern Gardens included, have rules that dogs are not allowed off their leash outside of their own apartments, dogs should still be trained to come when they are called. Just in case they do sneak out the door, and for proper dog park etiquette as well.
- No jumping: As we noted already, apartment dwelling dogs encounter a lot more people than house dwelling dogs. This means that they need to know how to behave when they run into strangers. A polite dog doesn’t jump up on every person he meets, and he certainly doesn’t bark or growl.
- Friendly neighbors: Just as apartment dwelling dogs must be polite to their human neighbors, they must be polite to their fellow dogs. It’s unlikely that yours will be the only dog in a dog friendly building, so ideally your dog should know and be on good terms with all his canine neighbors as well as his human neighbors.
- Crate training: Unless you plan to be home every time you need maintenance to enter your apartment, it’s important to train your dog to stay in a crate while you’re not home. Better yet, you could take him to doggie daycare, or hire a dog walker to come check on him while you’re at work. It’s safer for your dog and the maintenance man if your furry companion is kept out of the way. In fact, most maintenance men aren’t likely to enter an apartment if they aren’t sure the dog residing there is in a crate.
